An interview Derek Foran

Derek Foran joined Rovers in January 2010. A solid defender, Derek recently signed a new contract and will be hoping to break into the first team next season.

First of all Derek, thanks for taking the time to do this interview.

No problem, If Danny Ventre can take the time to do it,well so can (Hes my all time idol)

Why did you decide to join Rovers after leaving Bray ?

Bray was just a dog fight every game unfortunately, I thought at sligo we might have a decent chance of winning things especially when I heard some of the big names signing such as your Eoin Doyle's and Paul Whelan's

Who were your biggest influences as a child ?

Without a doubt big Duncan Ferguson and Alan Stubbs.
I had a cousin that played for shelbourne i used to go watch aswell so that got me wanting to be a footballer
.

Where did you play your youth football ?

I started at the local side Templeogue United then signed for St Pats when I was 12 and played all the way up.

Even at the start of the year, could you have predicted finishing the season with two cup medal's to your name ?

Funny enough yes, I always thought we were capable of winning the league to be honest, unfortunately it just took time for us to click.

Despite your limited games, whats been your favourite performance so far ?

We played a reserve game against Bohs in Dublin (the day of oxygen funnily enough) haha, I was awesome that game, hahaha, ah no I think UCD at home when I scored,I didnt play alot at all so to score for a team like Sligo Rovers was a brilliant feeling for me.

You mentioned in a programme that you had been learning from Jim Lauchlan in training. As a young defender yourself, how did having a player like Lauchlan benifit you and you feel you've improved since ?

Yeah as you know at the start of the season it just didnt click for me at all,no matter what so I think when Jim came in just even looking at his attitude off the pitch was a real eye opener. He does everything right and looks after himself well so I copied him really and it worked,he was great to talk to and get advice and all that from aswell and it really gave me confidence and helped me.

Have you ever considered playing abroad ?

I'd like to start playing regularly over here first then take it from there.

Do you think Rovers can challenge for the league next season ?

Easily,we're the best footballing team by far. We just need to keep the same players and add 1 or 2,maybe get rid of peersy or jim haha

Are their any players in particular you'd like to see join the club for next season ?

Yeah i'd love to see the like of a Tony Hibbert maybe, I think both of us would compliment each other terrifically.

If not a footballer, what would you be ?

Selling my body

What do you hope to do when you retire ?

I'd like to become a manager some day,a Paul Cook like figure all going well!

Who is the 'joker' of the team ?

Nelson Viera, the lad never stop he does have the team in hysterics.

Who has the best and worst taste in music on the team ?

i've easily the best, Oasis mixed with some traditional chart toppers, cant go wrong can you.
I think John Dillon's taste in music is awful,he like to listen to the likes of 'Steps' and some old band called 'Five'. Hes just recently told me hes bought the "Spice Girls Greatest Hits" album, unforgivable in my view.
